About Anne

Anne Upton

I am a registered member of the United Kingdom Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP) as a psychotherapist in training and clinical practice. I am in the third year of training, and am currently studying for a Masters degree (MA) in Mindfulness Based Core Process Psychotherapy at the Karuna Institute in Devon. Through my personal work in this therapeutic process, I’ve learned how to approach my own trauma and the unhelpful adaptations that developed in response to these events. Through working in this modality I have had first-hand experience of the healing potential of a trusted therapeutic relationship.

Prior to training as a psychotherapist I have spent my time as an artist, mother, and social entrepreneur in environmentally ethical product development.

What therapy is to me

I see it as my job to hold a safe, welcoming, non-judgemental space to meet whatever arises for the person who comes to see me. While some people might come to therapy to sort through a difficult situation or tough patch in life, others might seek help for ongoing issues. Depression, anxiety, low self worth, grief, trauma; among other difficulties, are not unusual experiences, but intricately individual at the same time. My practice is to be with the truth of these experiences, and at the same time to orient to the natural well-being that is everyone’s birthright.

I believe that we are naturally adaptive beings, and so in response to every difficulty there is an adaptation that happens. These adaptations are helpful during the moment, or period of distress, but over time they either serve us or they don’t. Through a gentle and compassionate process of looking at these adaptations that are no longer serving, we can undo the limiting effect they have on our lives.
